Seva Foundation
Turning Compassion into Action

The name Seva (say-va) is a Sanskrit word meaning "selfless service."

Seva was founded in 1978 by a group of medical professionals, counterculture activists, musicians, and compassionate individuals, all dedicated to the alleviation of suffering in the world. Most notably among them are public health expert Dr. Larry Brilliant, spiritual leader Ram Dass, and humanitarian activist Wavy Gravy.

Seva focuses on:

The Prevention of Blindness.  There are an astonishing 39 million people who live in darkness around the globe. The extreme majority of people who are blind live in the developing world, 90% to be exact.  Perhaps the most incredible statistic is that eight out of ten people who are blind could see again if they simply had access to an eye doctor(source: World Health Organization). Since 1978, Seva's Sight Program has helped over 3 million people to see again!  Read more >

Native American community health.  One out of six Native Americans suffers from diabetes. Native communities are plagued with poverty and a loss of culture and pride. Seva's grassroots projects are helping to build a healthy future.

Seva Concerts and Events.  In some circles we are best known for our world-class benefit concerts. They began when the Grateful Dead performed a benefit concert to help get the organization off the ground. In the 35 years since, hundreds of all-star musicians have graced the stage and helped raise millions in support of Seva's global programs. Recent events have included Joan Baez, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Elvis Costello, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Ani DiFranco, Ben Harper and many many more!  Learn more about Seva's benefit concerts >
