Seva and Focusing Philanthropy collaborating to build sight hospital in Nepal in honor of World Sight Day 2013

In recognition of the 2013 World Sight Day, on October 21st, Seva Foundation and Focusing Philanthropy announced the completion of a fundraising campaign that will provide life-changing eye care services to hundreds of thousands of under-served people.

In 2012, Seva and Focusing Philanthropy set a collective goal to raise the funding needed to provide 2,020 people with sight-restoring cataract surgeries. The campaign was so successful that 4,208 sight-restoring surgeries were funded in five countries.

This year the two nonprofits set out to raise $200,000 to construct and equip a rural eye care hospital and a primary eye care clinic in eastern Nepal, a region of over 500,000 where people have very little access to basic eye care, much less sight restoring surgeries. The just-completed campaign raised slightly more than $200,000.

The construction of the first two floors of the Khandbari Primary
Eye Care Clinic is well underway.

The new facilities will provide the permanent capacity to perform 1,000 sight-restoring surgeries each year and upgrade the infrastructure and human resources to address 22,000 other eye care needs annually. Additionally, the hospital and clinic, and their Nepalese medical staffs, will support temporary eye camps where over 800 additional sight restoring surgeries can be performed annually, reducing the backlog of treatable blind people seeking sight-restoring treatments.

Since 1980, Seva has been working with the government of Nepal and other non-profits to construct, equip, and staff a national eye care network with the ultimate goal of eliminating preventable blindness. Widespread poverty and remote villages have made eye care, especially cataract surgery, unavailable for many Nepalese. Sufficient progress has been made so that the goal of national coverage is within reach. These facilities built and equipped in part with funds raised through Seva’s collaboration with Focusing Philanthropy this year will finally permit completion of Nepal’s national eye-care network by addressing the last substantially underserved region.

The first floor of the new rural eye hospital in Dhankuta is
nearing completion.

In December 2013 staff members from Seva and Focusing Philanthropy will travel to the eastern Nepal to interact with their local partners, community members and government leaders in Nepal and observe progress in constructing both the rural eye care hospital and feeder primary eye care clinic.
